Citizens of Edo State, under the auspices of Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOCSO) were fully present at the stakeholder’s meeting held in Benin today on the proposed increment in electricity tariff by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).
EDOCSO’s position was that, the proposed electricity tariff increment should be jettisoned as the power company have failed in discharging their core mandates to the people in line with the various sales and performance agreements entered with the Federal Government. Other customers who were present bared their minds on the gross incompetence exhibited by the BEDC since takeover in 2014.
Majority of the speakers lambasted the BEDC over their retrogressive operations that have plunged the state into total darkness.
Their leaders informed the management of the BEDC to steer clear of the planned increase from the present N31.27k to its proposed N48.29k effective April, 2020. They argued that the company’s services must be improved first before they can begin to consider increment.
In another development, management of the BEDC had tried to prevent the group from attending the stakeholders meeting, by writing to the police.
But members of EDOCSO stormed the police state command after stating their position in rejecting the tariff hike to respond to the petition.
