RECESSION: ‘We must end corruption, strengthen our institutions, introduce death sentence’ – Eholor

Democracy Observer-General and founder of human rights group, One Love Foundation, Chief Patrick Eholor has said that unless Nigerians begin to fight corruption with a greater frenzy, the second wave of the recession will bite much harder than the first.

Eholor, in a telephone interview with Jungle Journalist Media Limited, suggested a strengthening of our institutions, trial and death execution/life imprisonment for defaulters, and recovery of stolen funds back into the economy.

His words: “It’s an unfortunate circumstance that Nigerians have found themselves. You deserve those who govern you, and unfortunately, we have never had the opportunity to choose who governs us. We’ve never had leadership in this country, just banditry and bandits who call themselves leaders instead of them referring to themselves as emperors.

“The only way we can salvage this situation is to strengthen our institutions and if possible, to have a proactive law to try every corrupt civil servant and politician, service chiefs and others; to introduce death sentence or life imprisonment for those who have stolen our common patrimony and recover the moneies they have stolen and put that money into infrastructure, health sector, educational sector and other public interests, and reduce the number of churches and mosques we have in this country.

“Unfortunately, most of them have become merchants of misery, and I therefore suggest we borrow a leaf from China and Rwanda.

“If we follow suit, a better Nigeria is possible. Don’t forget the trademark of president Muhammadu Buhari that if we don’t kill corruption, corruption will kill us”, he argued.

Four suspected armed robbers shot dead in Delta

Four suspected armed robbers have been shot dead by men of the Delta State Police Command, alongside a vigilante group in Oviorie Community, Ethiope East council area of Delta State.

The Nation gathered that the incident occurred Friday night, while the hoodlums were on the run.

According to reports, the suspects were gunned down by the operatives after robbing some residents of the community.

The armed hoodlums were reported to have engaged the police team deployed to the area in a gun battle running over 30 minutes.

However, the policemen and the vigilante members were able to subdue them, leading to the killing of four members of the gang said to be about eight.

Other members reportedly escaped during the gun exchange.

Some arms recovered from the deceased include two locally made guns and a tricycle, otherwise known as ‘Keke NAPEP’.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the incident on Monday.

She said the late armed robbers were operating at Oviorie and Ovu communities when they were killed, adding that efforts are on to apprehend other fleeing suspects.

Hoodlums terrorise Ugbowo, Uselu residents in Benin with house-to-house robbery

Residents of Uselu, Ugbowo and environs in Benin City are faced with turbid times in the hands of some suspected armed criminal gangs who now parade adjoining streets and rob shop owners of their goods, kill and harrased harmless residents in broad day light operations.

With similar attacks also taking place in other areas of Textile Mill Road, Medical Stores, Okhoro, Isihor and Oluku axis during the day, it was learned that, some residents are seeking God’s intervention following the failure of police operatives to fully resume duty.

Despite battle for supremacy between cult rivalry groups who had embarked on embarrassing wanton killings of one another, hopes were gradually gathering momentum for a peaceful resolve between the groups.

Upper Sakponba had been the epicenter of the resultant clashes but with the recent presence of security joint task force there, it appears that, the fleeing suspects have taken Uselu-Ugbowo-
Medical Stores as their new abode.

The worst hit areas are residents of Good Samaritan Street,
Ediakean Primary School Road, Iyase, Ebo Junction and Etiosa suburb, who are forced to sleep early with doors closed and hallucinating similar attacks.

It was gathered that shop owners close up their shops by 4pm and resume sales at 8:30am with most areas around deserted and lonely enough for criminal onslaughts.

Commercial activities have hit all time low over incessant gun shots that had continued to rent the air at free will, resulting to killings in most cases.

Days ago, a man who was reportedly returning home from work was attacked and killed around First Federal Road with his lifeless body seen in the early hours of the following day.

According to a source, the deceased was few meters away from his place when he was reportedly hacked to death.

Similarly, a middle age furniture apprentice, who was at his furniture stall had his life was cut short by the suspected criminals who ambushed him while he was said to have gone to buy materials for a job.

A senior resident who spoke to us on condition of anonymity, said “the gang of armed robbers moved door-to-door, shooting or hacking some of their victims to death”.
According to him, “they rob traders’ shops on a daily basis. Everyday, we are afraid of the criminal elements. They move around brandishing guns and weapons of mass destruction.

“They do not only threaten their victims, but rob them of their belongings. Those children are very scary”.

“We are appealing to appropriate authorities to protect the live and properties they took oath for. We can’t sleep with our eyes closed”.

It would be recall that More than four police divisional stations across the city centre were burned recently in a peaceful protest against police brutality turned violence.

Statistics are difficult to come by, but many would say Edo State, particularly Benin City, has seen increase in crime in recent weeks.

The level of murder and robbery rates have risen since the advent of #EndSARS protest which was believed to have been hijacked by suspected hoodlums and cultists, leaving no fewer than 38 persons murdered since the cult clashes.

As at the time of filing this report, sounds from the security vehicles parading were heard moving into the flash points of the adjoining streets in Uselu to signal their presence in the danger zones as sounds of heavy gun shooting at every interval rent the air.

Nigeria: Over 60 (30 Identified) Now killed & 90-100 (50 Identified) Injured In Obigbo Army Massacre-Intersociety

Onitsha, Eastern Nigeria
Thursday, 19th Nov 2020

The Int’l Society for Civil Liberties & Rule of Law is deeply sad, worried and dismayed over the continuation of Army massacre operations in Obigbo and global silence trailing same.

With our latest updates, the number of slain defenseless Igbo citizens of Obigbo residency and environs in Rivers State has now risen to at least 60 with between 90 and 100 others shot and deadly injured. Dozens have also been permanently disappeared and 200-300 others militarily abducted and held in custodies only known to the Nigerian Army.

The Nigeria Police Force, Rivers State Command is also strongly believed to be holding not less than 100 persons. All the surviving victims being held alive by the Army and the Police are strongly believed to be undergoing torture and other harsh detention conditions. There are also no credible pieces of evidence showing that the sick and the injured detainees are receiving adequate medical treatments, raising serious fears of some dying in Army or Police custody or both.

We therefore strongly call for international intervention to stop the atrocious Army operations. The Nigerian Government and Nyesom Wike led Government of Rivers State must be prevailed upon to immediately withdraw the killer soldiers deployed to Obigbo and environs and all those currently held by the Army and the Nigeria Police Force in Rivers State and neighboring Abia State must be freed unconditionally or put on fair trial.

The Obigbo massacre must not only be thoroughly investigated but also the perpetrators of the dastardly act including Major Gen Olu Irefin (GOC, 6 Division, Port Harcourt), Brig Gen SB Kumupayi (Commander, 14 Brigade, Ohafia) and Gov Nyesom Wike must be fished out at appropriate time and place and put on local and international trial for mass murder and crimes against property well as crimes against humanity.

We also wish to state boldly and factually that what is going on in Obigbo is far more devastating and three times murderous than the 20th night of Oct 2020 Lekki Tollgate Army shootings and killings targeted at gathered unarmed and defenseless protesters in Lagos State.

In other words, the number of unarmed and defenseless citizens killed so far at Obigbo in Rivers State is at least three times higher than that of Lekki Tollgate in Lagos State.

While the Lekki Tollgate killings took the lives of about 20 persons, the number of persons so far killed in Obigbo has risen to at least 60, out of which 30 have been verified bodily or by names.

On the other hand, while the number of those shot and deadly injured in the Lekki Tollgate shootings is about 30, the number of those shot and deadly injured at Obigbo has risen to between 90 and 100, out of which 50 names have so far been identified. The ongoing Obigbo Army massacre has also resulted in permanent disappearances of dozens and 200-300 Army abductions.

Unlike the Lekki Tollgate Army massacre where ‘ethnic cleansing’ was never intended even though a good number, if not majority of the dead activists were Igbo citizens; in Obigbo, the Army massacre there was and still is a full blown ‘ethnic cleansing’.

Apart from the fact that 98% of the dead and the shot and deadly injured victims in Obigbo are citizens of Igbo Nation, using “IPOB death code”, the Nigerian Army and other killer squads loyal to the Rivers State Government headed by Gov Nyeson Wike have also applied instant death and abduction code against every citizen with Igbo name or identity.

In other words, any citizen with Igbo name or identity caught during their house breaking and house-to-house search and violence is instantly labeled “IPOB member” and either killed or abducted.

Therefore, going by our earlier promise of keeping the global community with verified updates over the ongoing Nigerian Army-Gov Nyesom Wike massacre operations in Obigbo, Rivers State; Intersociety has updated and verified 30 of the dead victims and 50 names of the shot and deadly injured in the massacre. We had in our first statement of 6th Nov 2020, released names of eight slain citizens and three unidentified others as well as 22 names of the shot and deadly injured others and made a promise to launch a detailed investigation into the massacre.

The Obigbo Army massacre, now bearing semblance of ‘ethnic cleansing’ and still ongoing, had occurred since 21st Oct 2020 following a curfew and thoughtless order issued same date by Gov Nyesom Wike, which the heavily Muslim controlled and secularity challenged Nigerian Army cashed in to levy human and property war targeting members of the Judeo-Christian Igbo population residing in the area; by killing them at will and looting and destroying their properties. Homes and areas occupied by Igbo natives have been targeted and are still being targeted by soldiers and-any person with Igbo identity is instantly made to run the high risk of losing his or her life or liberty and property.

The soldiers had In keeping with their new “IPOB death code”, abducted and presumably killed scores of unarmed and defenseless Igbo citizens living in the area-with multiple dozens, if not hundreds still held in the custodies of the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army located in Port Harcourt and Elele as well as its neighboring Asa-Ukwa military facilities in Abia State.

They have been held in such facilities for past 28 days or since 21st Oct without being released or handed over to the Nigeria Police Force as required by law. Hundreds of homes have been broken into and still being broken into-with their Igbo occupants abducted at ungodly hours and their properties razed or destroyed or vandalized or burnt. It is credibly estimated that the Nigerian Army is presently holding not less than 200-300 of the arrested.

For instance, the areas affected by the Army massacre in Obigbo and environs are Obigbo Expressway (surrounded with armored tanks since 21st Oct till date), Old Aba Road (under siege since 21st Oct), Obigbo Roundabout (under siege since 21st Oct), Mbabo Camp (under siege since 21stOct), Ehi Road/Umunchi (under siege since 23rd Oct), Kom Kom Area (under siege since 24th Oct), Ohafia/Abiriba Quarters (under siege since 26th-27thOct and 11th-12th Nov and Obeama Area (under siege since 29th-31st Oct ), etc.

Terrified witnesses including passersby are also alleging the dumping and drowning of scores of slain corpses inside ‘Imo Gate’ and ‘Mmiri Nwanyi’ Rivers. Some claimed to have sighted some floating corpses at ‘Mmiri Nwanyi River on 29th and 31stOct and ‘Imo Gate River Banks’ on 7th and 8th Nov 2020. The witnesses were unable to photo or video the ‘floating corpses’ owing to heavy presence of soldiers guarding the areas for possible destruction of evidence or erasing traces.

Timber Road area has been under Army terror since 28th Oct. A Jewish Shabbat Mission in the area was attacked and dozens of its worshippers and officials abducted with scores killed. Umusonye/School Road and Vacation Areas have also been under Army siege, forcing several, if not many of their residents to flee. At Okpulo Area, residents including Shabbat religionists were attacked on 6thNov and on 8th Nov, the Shabbat Mission in the Area was demolished; likewise terrorization of residents of Ikwere-Ngwo Area and violent attacks on their houses including demolition of another Shabbat Mission in the Area. Houses and residents of Okoloma-Afam have been under heavy military terrorization since 12th and 14th Nov 2020.

Along Tap Junction, at least four defenseless citizens were shot dead and scores injured by soldiers in the evening of 11th Nov. This is according to eyewitnesses’ accounts. At Mbano Camp same evening of 11th Nov 2020, three persons were shot dead and at Obigbo Express Junction, two more persons were shot dead and at Ohafia and Abiriba Junction same date and time, witnesses said “between 15 and 20 persons” were shot dead following indiscriminate shootings in different terminal directions by soldiers. While some of the corpses particularly those that felled off the road or street or inside gutters are abandoned to decompose, soldiers made away with others.

The heavy presence of soldiers also made it very difficult for relations of the slain to pick up their relatives’ bodies. Late Queen Nwazuo was among those shot and killed by military’s rain of bullets fired in different terminal directions. She was shot dead in front of her shop around noon of 23rd Oct 2020. She was killed at Umunchi Junction, Ehi Road in Obigbo. Among those abducted in their sleep by soldiers are Aneke Sunday and Onyema Christopher Onyeiro.

While Citizen Aneke Sunday was abducted in his sleep around 2am in his residence around Market Road, Obigbo, Citizen Onyema Christopher Onyeiro and scores of his co residents were abducted around 11pm on 17th Nov 2020 at Isaiah Eletuo Street, Obigbo.

In all these, the Government of Rivers State and authorities of the Nigerian Army (who have refused to speak and maintained silence of the graveyard on the massacre) are stopping at nothing to ensure that the truth concerning the massacre never sees the light of the day. Gov Wike apart from going about denying that “no killings took place at Obigbo”, has also been trying to divert the public attention by urging ‘all to condemn the killing of soldiers, police personnel and burning of police stations at Obigbo rather than wasting time seeking to investigate without evidence the Oyigbo incident”.

Attempts by the NBA fact-finding committee to investigate the massacre have also been strongly resisted by the Gov and Government of Rivers State.

Cult war creeps from Edo to Delta, as 7 are killed in Ughelli

Seven persons were said to have been killed at the weekend as two rival cult groups clashed in Ughelli, headquarters of Ughelli North local government area of Delta State.

This development is the latest since secret cultists have resumed their war in Benin City, capital of Edo State.

A POS Operator was also robbed and shot by hoodlums at the weekend during the clash between Aiye and Bangas cult groups while many others were left with serious injuries as both groups engaged each other with guns and other weapons.

It was reliably gathered that trouble started when a mamber of one of the cult groups was killed, which later led to the killings of members by both cult groups.

A source who pleaded anonymity said over the weekend several members belonging to either group have been seen killed at different locations of Ughelli, Ughelli North Local Government Area.

It was gathered that one of the strongmen of Bangas was murdered along Akpodiete street, two others killed in Ekiugbo while another one killed at Oghenevwetata street on Saturday night.

Two other cult members suspected to be brothers, Master Frank and Oghenero were attacked at in their house (Poyo compound) close to Ataverhe junction in Ekiugbo, Ughelli North.

The Divisional Police Officer, A’Division Ughelli could not be reached for comments on the incident but a senior police officer confirmed the incident.

Man opens his father’s skull with an axe, buried corpse in standing position

Police operatives attached to the Enugu state command have apprehended one Johnson Ogbu for allegedly hacking his 64-year-old father, William Ogbu, to death with an axe, at Aji Community in Igbo Eze North Local Government Area of the state.

CRIMECHANNELS gathered that, the suspect, Johnson, one of the deceased 5 children, was mentally ill a few years ago but got treated and later became a shoemaker. Johnson lived with his parents in their home in Umuidenyi.

It was learnt that on the day of the incident, Johnson’s mother left their home to join other villagers to celebrate the Umuidenyi clan day at the Umuidenyi Town Hall. It was in her absence that the suspect allegedly used an axe to break his father’s skull, killing him on the spot. He allegedly dragged his father’s body to a nearby plantain plantation and dug the ground where he buried the corpse.

It was alleged that Johnson’s mother who came back later asked her son the whereabouts of his father and was informed that the man was sick and had gone to see a doctor without mentioning any particular clinic where he had gone to seek medical attention.

She told newsmen, “We looked for him for three days, combing all the hospitals around. It was when we failed to locate him that we alerted the members of the Aji Neighbourhood Watch Group, which in turn alerted the police. The police arrived on Friday morning alongside members of the neighbourhood watch and later found a shallow grave near the compound where William was buried in a standing position.”

She told newsmen that her son used an axe to break the skull of her husband, she also said that he used another sharp object to open his father’s belly and puncture other parts of his internal organs.

Meanwhile, the suspect Johnson, is currently being detained at the Enugu Ezike Police Station.

Total breakdown of law & order imminent as cult killings, kidnapping, armed robbery escalate in Benin

The security situation in Benin, the Edo capital, has taken a turn for the worse following a jump in cases of kidnapping, armed robbery and cult-related killings, NAN checks have revealed.

The upsurge in the crimes was first noticed since the #ENDSARS protests that led to the release of no fewer than 1900 from two Correctional Centres, burning of at least eight police stations and the looting of their armouries by hoodlums.

Night life in the capital city, in the meantime, has since ground to a halt as incidences of kidnappings and armed robbery have escalated.

NAN reports that while residents of the capital city were still reeling from the high crime rate, cult related killings, mostly linked to clashes between rival Vikings and Aye confraternities, have only heightened the fears of the residents in different parts of Benin.

The tally from the cult related killings indicated that no fewer than 30 people were killed within the past week, with three others similarly killed on Sunday by suspected cultists in the city.

Two of the bodies were discovered at Urohra Junction, one by pipeline junction in Eyaen, and on Saturday, two bodies were found around Uselu, while Evidence Street by Isihor accounted for three others.

Before then, several people lost their lives in different parts of the city, including Idogbo, Y-Junction, Nomayo, Three House all along Sokponba Road, Ogida Barracks, Siluko Road, Costain area in New Benin, Aduwawa near Oando filling station, Upper Mission, near Ewa Road junction, Cherubim and Seraphim area of Upper Mission.

Meanwhile, the police are soliciting for information from the public that would help them recover stolen arms and ammunition from the police stations that were looted, trashed or burnt in the state.

When contacted, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Babatunde Kokumo, said the attack on police facilities, burning of police stations and patrol vehicles during the EndSARS protests, that turned violent, had affected their operations.

He, however, assured that the police will gradually resume work at their duty posts to check crime and criminality in the state.

According to him, in Upper Sokponba in Ikpoba-Okha axis, three police facilities were burnt down displacing the DPOs and other police officers in these divisions.

“These officers now report at the state command headquarters, we now send them on patrol from there so you should expect some hitches, but we will continue to work and get things right.

“The EndSARS protests, which were hijacked by hoodlums, has actually impacted negatively on police operations and unleashed attacks on police facilities’’, he said.

“How do you expect, where 200 inmates escaped, for things to be normal? Kokumo asked, saying, “We were doing our best to arrest the criminals in Edo before the jail break and we are equally trying our best now to see that the escapees are re-arrested and brought to book.

He urged the media to cooperate with and appreciate the efforts of the Police, especially now that they are expected to stem the tide of crime, whereas they lacked operational vehicles, arms and ammunition.

Lagos police clear out black spots, arrest 720 suspected criminals

The Lagos State Police Command, on Sunday, carried out simultaneous raids on areas believed to be harbouring criminals and hoodlums, across the 14 area commands in the state.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement issued in Lagos, said that 720 suspects were arrested, with various weapons and substances suspected to be Indian hemp and cocaine.

“In its bid to solidify the security architecture of the state, the Lagos Command re-launched its anti crime strategies to curb crimes and criminality across the state.

“In the swift operations, police operatives arrested 720 suspects with incriminating items, including locally-made guns, cartridges, charms and substances suspected to be Indian hemp and cocaine.

“Also, some items suspected to have been looted from various shopping outlets within the state during the recent EndSARS violence were found within the suspected criminals,” he said.

Adejobi said that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Hakeem Odumosu, had earlier warned and directed police officers and men to move against lawlessness and criminality in the state.

“Odumosu affirmed the zeal of the command to sustain the operations, even beyond the yuletide season.

“The police chief commended the officers and men of the command for the successful operations, while he urged them to be at alert for more operations across the state,” the police spokesman said.

Adejobi said that Odumosu had also directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of SCID, Panti to commence discreet investigation on the arrested suspects for immediate prosecution.

“Odumosu urged those whose items were looted during the recent EndSARS violence to come up for claims of their items, with prove of ownership,” Adejobi said.

Deputy Governor’s brother kidnapped

The younger brother to Edo State Deputy Comrade Philip Shaibu, has been kidnapped by gunmen at Irhiri, Benin City.

Jungle Journalist Media Ltd learnt that Mr Frederick Shaibu was kidnapped at about 7 am, while the gun-toting kidnappers left his children in the car, bewildered.

Irhiri community, where the kidnapping took place, is a few metres away from the Ogba Zoo, where Mr Osa Ehanire, manager of the zoo and younger brother to the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, was kidnapped sometime ago, with the Ogba River serving as the getaway route for the men of the underworld, operating with speed boats.

According to available information, the kidnappers were yet to make any contact with the Shaibus as at the time of filing this report.

A family source who confirmed the incident on condition of anonymity disclosed that the kidnappers “attacked him and took him away. It happened at around 7 am when he was going to drop his children in school. The children were left by the gunmen and they took their father away. But the incident has been reported to security agencies, they have not made any contact with the family.”

“It is believed that the kidnappers came through the river because people who saw the incident said they went through the bushes in that area that leads to the riverside. Security agencies have been informed and they are doing everything possible to ensure that he is released unhurt and be reunited with his family,” The family source revealed.

The Edo State Police Command Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chidi Nwabuzor, said, “I am not aware of this development yet but I will find out.
