EDO 2020: We must encourage more people to register and participate in elections – Patriot Eholor

The 2020 Governorship election in Edo State has come and gone, and winners and losers have emerged after a tight contest.

In this interview, Democracy Defender and Observer General of the Federal Republic, Patriot Patrick Eholor airs his views on the elections and the way forward for politics, politicians and electioneering in Nigeria.

Excerpts:

What is your view about the outcome of the election?

I think the people have spoken and we must respect the rights of the people. Elections have never been perfect anywhere in the world, it’s a democratic process and so there must be a winner and a loser.

Was it up to your expectation?

I wouldn’t say it’s not up to my expectation. We must educate the electorate, however, we must encourage people over 18 years to register so they can participate in the next election because we have more people dancing owanbe, beating drums, dancing azonto, changing the campaign ground to a comedy ground.

Can you attest that this election will change the face of election in Nigeria, particularly in Ondo?

Election is a serious business. I think there will be a lot of lessons to be learned from our own election as regards the upcoming Ondo election.

What is your score for INEC and police?

INEC isn’t perfect but I think they did tremendously well during this election and should be commended. Police are not supposed to observe and monitor our elections, however I must praise them because they were not biased and partisan in this election from my own opinion.

Why should Edo people be celebrated in this election?

I think the Edo people should be celebrate this election because we have less casualties and the ‘Omo n’ Oba’ of Benin, Ewuare the Great should be highly praised for his prayers.

Did the election really represent the voice of Edo people?

I think the election really represented the Edolites because we can’t be cowed.

What is your advice to the loser, Pastor Ize-Iyamu Osagie and party?

My advice to Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu is he should remain steadfast and be a leader that he has truly been and congratulate those who stood behind him during this tough times.

What are your expectations from the winner, Gov Goodwin Obaseki and your advice?

My advice for Godwin Obaseki is he should tune down his rhetoric. It’s only God that choose to have mercy for those he has mercy on and govern those who voted for him and those who didn’t vote for him. He is an elected governor of Edo State not for PDP or APC.

Can you see hope for Edo people in Obaseki’s second term in office?

Edo State has proven that they are the pacesetters of Nigerian politics. They will not expect anything less than the best from his administration.

What will One Love Foundation do to help the Obaseki Government?

One Love Foundation will remain fair and firm.
It’s committed in checkmating any underperforming government and institutions. I hereby congratulate men and women who came out under the sun and rain to cast their vote. ‘Oba gha to kpe re, Ise!’

EDO 2020:End desperate security attack on PDP governors now, Emeka Kalu charges Buhari

The National Coordinator of PDP Coalition,Chief Dr. Emeka Kalu has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to put a check on security agencies and their cohorts harrasing governors of the party in Edo State.

The PDP chieftain who decried the barrage of police officers at the hotel housing Governor Nyesom Wike, warned that if the situation is allowed to fester, the elections may be marred by violence and lawlessness, with security agents who should protect the law are the ones abusing it.

He said “It is disheartening and an impunity of the highest order for police officers to be harrasing elected governors for the sake of elections. Why is the harassment against the opposition governors and not against the governors of the All Progressives Congress who are in the state?

I am calling on the President, the IGP of police and other stakeholders to wade into the situation as this injustice cannot be allowed to take over our civil rights in the name of politics to serve the interest of the APC and its selfish goals.

“What’s happening now is dsmangerous for our democracy, and smells of terror being hatched to be unleashed during the elections. The president must arrest the situation immediately before it goes out of hand. Edo people must be allowed to vote and be voted for, without desperate politicians and security trying to thwart results”, he warned.

Edo Elections: PDP Protests Siege on Governors By Security Agents

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as unacceptable the clampdown on its governors by security agents in Benin City, Edo State capital, ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

The national leadership of the party, in a press conference addressed by the PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, alerted the nation and the international community of the security siege on PDP governors in their lodging in Benin City.

The party expressed shock that security agents were detailed to surround the lodging of PDP governors to harass and intimidate them, whereas APC governors, including the governor of Kano state, Abdullahi Ganduje, his Imo state counterpart, Hope Uzodimma as well as the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, are left free in the comfort of the residence of the former national chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole in GRA, Benin City.

The Press Release, signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, the
National Publicity Secretary of the party read in part;

“Our party considers this siege as provocative and completely unacceptable as there cannot be two sets of laws for the citizens of our nation. In as much as the APC governors are given the liberty to stay in Benin City, our governors must not be harassed or stampeded to leave the state.

“At any rate, we are confident that our governors will not allow themselves to be stampeded.

“The PDP calls on all stakeholders in the Edo governorship election, particularly the security agencies, to work towards a peaceful, credible, transparent, free and fair election on Saturday”.

Edo Guber 2020: PFN Charges Edo People To Maintain Peace During Elections

National President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Rev. Dr. Felix Omobude, has charged the people of Edo State, to maintain peace and orderliness before, during and after the September 19 governorship election in the state.

Dr. Omobude who is also the General Superintendent of Gospel Light International Ministry (GLIM) – New Covenant Gospel Church (NCGC), in a press statement in Benin City, signed by his Media Aide, Deacon Ralph Okhiria, said the election of an individual politician is not worthy of the blood or life of any resident of the state.

“My dear good people of Edo state, I identify and join my voice to the many other good citizens of the state to call for peace during this governorship election scheduled for Saturday, this week.

“The contestants have transversed the length and breadth of the state and have told us what they intend to do and can do. It is now our duty to make our choices and then come out boldly to exercise our franchise.

“I want to call on you to do what is right. Don’t give yourself to violence, don’t allow your children to be used for violent activities.

“The Church stands for truth. We stand for justice. We stand for equity. Let’s defend our values. Truth must overcome falsehood. Light must overcome darkness.

“In your voting, don’t sell your conscience. Stand for what is right and the overall interest and development of our great state.

“Election is a period to reward good with our votes and also a period to punish evil with our Personal Voter’s Cards (PVC).

“The PFN also wishes to once again appeal to our politicians to be more circumspect in their utterances and activities, by ensuring that they put the state first in all their conducts.

“They should not let their ambitions blindfold them or override the peace of the state. It is important that politicians do not destroy the state and people they aspire to govern.

“Furthermore, it is important that the security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), carry out their jobs professionally, to engender peaceful, free, fair and credible election that we will all be proud of.

“I therefore enjoin all the Christians in Nigeria, particularly those in Edo State to be prayerful and go back to their core value as the pillar of truth and rise up in prayers against the forces of evils”, the PFN national president, added.

Foundation commends US over sanction on election riggers

The Coordinator of One Love Foundation, Chief Patrick Eholor has commended the Government of the United States of America over the latest ban on politicians who rigged elections.

Eholor was reacting to questions from journalists who sought his opinion on the development.

Speaking to Jungle Journalist Media Ltd, he said “It’s a welcome development. I honestly think it’s the most sincere thing the American Government has done for Nigeria. The European Union should also follow suit to restrain all Nigerian politicians who have been involved since our Nigerian democracy; there has to be a sanction for anyone who have been involved in the past or present.

“They and their families have to be banned from entering America or any European country. This will serve as a deterrent for present and future politicians. In fact, should go further more to seize their assets anywhere in the world because what they are doing is criminal and banditry, and also, they should extend the olive branch to some of our notorious pastors and some of our notorious military officials and all ministries and institutions, including Customs and Police for human right violations and theft.

“America should use their military intelligentsia and we would support them with our whistle blowers to give them information required to nail these bandits so we can have a better society. So the exodus of refugees will stop. We don’t need their foreign aid if they can assit us with this, for a better Nigeria is possible”, Eholor stated.

Edo Indigenous Movement rates guber candidates, tasks voters on manifestoes, antecedents

Founder, Edo Progressives Indigenous Assembly(EPIA), Chief (Bishop) Omogiade Enoyiogiere Edokpolo has charged eligible voters to give details to the manifestoes and previous records of those currently jostle to be governor of the state come September 19 as basis for making their choice.

The non- partisan group, founded in 2014 with the sole aim to promote amongst others, Edo indigenous language, cultural heritage and empowerment said the governorship candidates agenda constitute a major determinant to evaluate their ability to deliver the dividends of democracy to Edo people .

“We think both candidates, although there are others in the race are all Edo prominent indigenes, they have the technical know-how on how to pilot the affairs of the state. We are puting it before Edo indigenes to go and look at their manifestoes and check their previous records to determine who they will vote for,” he noted.

Edokpolor who condemned the shootings, attacks, violent clashes by suspected party thugs in the last few weeks, heaped the blame at the door of political parties in the state.

Drawing a comparative appraisal between the two contending lead candidates, Edokpolor said though the group has no preexisting records on the APC Governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize Iyamu but that judging from his presentations, synergies and the ways Edo people rally round him “chances are that he will be able to come up with something credible in line with his Simple Agenda”.

On Governor Godwin Obaseki, he posited “I think he has done well in terms of international investors and digital development attraction to the state including some infrastructure. But he has done very little or less in indigenous empowerment programmes and above all, he needs to be more in touch and accessible to the indigenes because we are native people and not English.

“On that note we score him 6.2 over 10 (62 percent) and hope if he wins that he will do better in this area. I think that is the only reason he is having much pressure now in campaign, otherwise he is supposed win with zero effort” .

EPIA president said the incoming governor must cultivate the habit of dressing the way of Edo people including periodic appraisal of his manifestoes .

“How can a man show love to people he does not even dress like not to talk about speaking their language? ,” he asked.
