In what may seem like a desperate move, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has gone ahead to announce the results of Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State.
They’ve been reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is the only body authorized by the Constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act to announce election results.
However, in a press conference on Sunday, ahead of INEC’s collation of results at its central Collation Centre in Benin City, PDP governors held a press conference and announced the Edo governorship results.
Addressing the press, the Governor of Adamawa State, Umaru Fintiri, flanked by other governors of the party, stated that the figures they announced were from “our collation agent that was ongoing before INEC disrupted the process.”
The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are currently locked in a tight race in the ongoing governorship election in Edo State.
A check by reporters on Sunday morning revealed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had uploaded about 97 percent of the 4,519 polling units’ results on its Results Viewing (IReV) portal.
The results indicated that Asue Ighodalo of the PDP and his APC counterpart, Senator Monday Okpebholo, are in a tight race.
According to the results on INEC’s IReV portal, while the PDP candidate is leading in the Edo South Senatorial District, the APC candidate leads in the Edo North Senatorial District.
