The member representing Uzo Uwani State Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Martins Chukwuma Ekwueme. has pledged to sponsor youths training in political education, orientation and governance in his Constituency.
Ekwueme, who is the Minority Whip of ENHA, made this pledge at a gathering of Ekwueme support group in Enugu on Monday.
Thanking the group members for the mobilization of voters during the elections to vote for himself and the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah, the lawmaker said the power of the youths is enormous, if properly harnessed and directed into nation building.
His words “This is our first meeting after the election, and it’s a good chance to fraternise. You people made us proud, you made the state proud, you made the governor proud. Because of what you did during election, I am very proud of you. This is a United and forward looking group and am proud to identify with this group.
“The Governor used to ask me how we succeeded, as the whole of Nsukka vowed not to support PDP. He said he cannot take our delivery for him for granted, and I thank you all, because if not for your efforts, we wouldn’t have been here today to celebrate”.
He further stated that it’s high time youths of Uzo Uwani begin to grow in political awareness – “I will sponsor leadership training because we need to train our youths. Uzo Uwani needs leadership training. I served 5 local government Chairmen. Our youths don’t understand the meaning of service.
“I ran for HoA three times, for twelve years, I was patient and had to wait for my time. Our youths need tutelage and training, in order to learn the rubrics of political progression”, he stated.
Also speaking, the Director General of Ekwueme Campaign Organization, Rita Eberechukwu Anigbogu said the meeting was to thank members of the group for their tireless efforts in order to secure victory for the PDP in the state. She argued that the party was rising again in the state, despite the setbacks it witnessed during the last elections.
Also in his speech, the Uzo Uwani PDP Local Government Area Chairman, Hon Jude Ifeanyi Okonkwo said “The meeting is a celebration of victory, as Ekwueme group is a springboard to further victories”.
He said that although the election was tough and fierce, but that it is a thing of joy that today, there was sweet victory, hence the celebration.
He described Ekwueme member as a ‘grassroots man’ “he is our person, and he knows what to do for us, and when to do it”, he stated.
In her own words, Hon. Princess Nneka Okoro. PDP National ex-officio in Enugu State said that Hon Ekwueme was very agile and alert during the campaigns, always responsive whenever he was needed. “For a man who knew what to do and never slept at work, are not surprised that he emerged winner”, she announced.
Barr Vincent Diugwu, a former SA to Governor Ugwuanyi and former Administrator, Ogboli Devt Area of Uzo Uwani was also at the meeting. He stated that despite the age of the HoA member, he is even qualified to be a governor. He said they chose Peter Mbah because of his sterling qualities despite the sentiments that accompanied the election, and same goes for Hon Ekwueme.
In his own speech, the immediate past Chief Protocol Officer, Dr. Barth Ezugwu expressed joy at the gathering, as it a great opportunity for Uzo Uwani if they utilise the opportunity they are using to move forward.
Ezugwu, who was also former Uzo Uwani local government area Chairman said “We have to be strategic in order to earn the fruits of our labour in politics. We deserve to get it and we must abstain from selfishness, protect our brothers and sisters and always do right. What we have done, we deserve strategic heights, but nobody will recognise our efforts if we keep fighting one another. We must manage our success with wisdom so that we can get more blessings as we move along”, he said.
The well attended meeting was characterised by talks, celebration and merriment.
