The House of Representatives has passed a bill that aims to establish a special armed squad for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) as part of efforts to improve the agency’s operations.
This bill, which passed its second reading, was sponsored by Rep. Abiodun Derin Adesida and Rep. Olaide Lateef Muhammed.
The proposed legislation seeks to amend the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Act, 2007. One of its major provisions is the creation of an FRSC Special Armed Squad, which would allow officers to carry firearms. This is part of broader reforms to enhance the capacity of the FRSC in fulfilling its responsibilities for road safety and traffic management across Nigeria.
Additionally, the bill aims to extend benefits to FRSC officers holding the rank of Deputy Corp Marshal, ensuring that they receive retirement packages commensurate with their position. Furthermore, it reinforces the FRSC’s authority over road traffic administration, crash prevention, public road supervision, and traffic regulation.
The bill also grants the FRSC powers to clear obstructions on public roads and mandates the agency to educate drivers, motorists, and the general public on proper road usage.
The bill received unanimous support from the House members, following a voice vote during the session.
