BREAKING: Governor Umahi has defected to APC, says Ebonyi lawmaker

Controversy has greeted the alleged defection of Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Umahi, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the 2023 general election.

The member representing Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Chinedu Ogah, had on Saturday congratulated the Governor Umahi for finally joining APC.

Ogah, who spoke authoritatively, said: “We don’t need division in South-East; we need unity in South-East, we need to be part of the Central government. We can’t continue to be in opposition.”

Ogah, the only National Assembly member from Ebonyi State elected on the platform of APC, revealed that Umahi’s defection was perfected after his meeting with critical stakeholders and leaders of APC including President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said: “Yes, Governor Umahi’s defection to our great party, APC is a step in the right direction. We cannot afford to remain in opposition. We must join the ruling party to continue to reap the dividends of democracy.

“I am calling on other Governors in south east to toe the line of Governor Umahi and join APC. We have to be at the centre, we have to join the mainstream politics for overall development of our zone and the country in general.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has done well. Everybody should join the APC to encourage him.”

But the Governor in a press statement this afternoon through his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Francis Nwaze, in Abakaliki, denied Umahi’s defection to APC.

The statement reads: “My attention has been drawn to the news making the round in some quarters of the media, alleging that the Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Umahi has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The news is a product of a figment of imagination on the part of the carriers as Governor Umahi was, is, and is still flying the flag of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“It is, however, difficult to observe how people are easily persuaded to believe in fake dummies in the name of rumours.

“If for any reason, Governor Umahi wishes to leave People Democratic Party (PDP), it will be officially communicated and can never be a product from rumour mongers,” he stated.

When contacted for further reaction, the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Barr. Uchenna Orji said he is somewhere and may not be chanced to react to the defection.

Orji who insisted on seeing the lawmaker’s statement before reaction said: “send to me the report, let me know what they are saying, “so that I can react. I am somewhere now.”

Ebonyi State PDP Chairman, Barr. Onyekachi Nwebonyi, when contacted couldn’t pick calls or respond to text messages sent to him by our reporter for reaction.

Ebonyi police arrest 2 minors for gang-raping teenage girl

Two teenage boys are now in police net in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital for gang-raping another teenager.

According to the information, the two boys, Chidubem Onwe (14 years) and Chidiogu Okonkwo (15 years) were said to have gone to the family house of the girl, Mmesoma Nwoye (15 years), when they noticed everyone had left the house, overpowered her, tore her dress and raped her.

The ugly incident happened at Ishieke, Abakaliki on Tuesday, 16 June, around 1:00pm, when the compound of the victim was lonely.

AJM NEWS gathered that Mmesoma’s father alerted the police when he came home from the day’s business and got information about what happened, as narrated by his daughter.

The police immediately swung into action, got the boys arrested and took the raped girl to the hospital for medical checkup.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ebonyi, DSP Loveth Odah, confirmed the report and said that the suspects had been arrested and had confessed to the crime.

The PPRO said: “On June 16th, 2020, at about 1:15pm one Fidelis Nwoye of Nkelegu in Ishieke community, in the company of her daughter, Nmesoma Nwoye 15yrs, came to the station and reported that at about 12pm June 14, one Chidiogu Okonkwo, 15yrs and one Chidubem Onwe, 14yrs, all of the same address went to his house while he was at his shop at Ishieke and tore his daughter’s cloth and raped her.

“So Police in Ishieke quickly swung into action and arrested the suspects and all of them confessed to the crime.
“I know that the only thing that can make children of that age do that kind of a thing is cultism and drugs.

Though they are minors, we have where we keep minors and they will be charged to court as soon as we are done with the doctor’s report”.

It is of note that recently, there had been several reported cases of rape in different parts of the country, as many suspects had also been arrested in connection to that.

LOCKDOWN: Gov. Ugwuanyi turns back 100 vehicles entering Enugu from Ebonyi State

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, this evening, paid an unscheduled visit to Enugu-Ebonyi boundary to monitor compliance with the ban on inter-state transportation aimed at containing the spread of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).

The governor who met over 150 vehicles queued at the Enugu axis of the boundary, attempting to enter the state, painstakingly trekked a long distance interrogating the drivers, one by one, to ascertain their eligibility for entering the state.

Consequently, over 100 vehicles that were not on essential duties were identified and turned back to Ebonyi State where they were coming from.

While on the enforcement exercise, Gov. Ugwuanyi met with the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Barr. Kelechi Igwe, who was on transit, and had a brief discussion with him.

OMPAN condemns ban of Sun, Vanguard reporters by Ebonyi governor

The Online Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (OMPAN) has condemned the ban on two reporters, Chijioke Agwu of Sun Newspaper and Peter Okutu of Vanguard newspaper by the Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr David Umahi.

OMPAN in a Statement expressed shock at the development, describing it as unfortunate, particularly at a time when “stakeholders the world over are closing ranks to create a common front, to execute the war against the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic”.

OMPAN therefore called on the governor to lift the ban and retract his statements with respect to the safety of the journalists.

The Statement, signed by its PRO, Ismaila YK read in part;

“What is particularly scary and of great concern, is the governor’s spat during a statewide broadcast, that if “the journalists think they have the pen, he has the koboko”. This arrogance was also on display when he declared, in clear Draconian style, that the people of the state might unleash mayhem on the journalists if they refuse to leave Ebonyi state.

“OMPAN considers the above statement a call to violence against the journalists whose only sin is reporting the true state of affairs in the state. Here then, is why OMPAN wants to state categorically clear, that should anything happen to the two journalists, Governor David Umahi should be ready to take responsibility, or face the wrath of the pen he has so arrogantly and disdainfully dismissed.

“For the sake of peace, especially in this material time, OMPAN calls on Governor Umahi to beat a quick retreat, lift the needless ban and retract his damaging statements with respect to the safety of the journalists without delay.

*The Nigerian Journalists is held to a code of conduct and ethics which if violated, invites sanction(s) commensurate with the transgression(s). However, nowhere was it stated that state governors can usurp the powers of the Nigerian Union of Journalists which is the statutory body responsible for the discipline of erring members, to play judge and jury on issues bothering on the professionalism of journalists.

“The authors of the Nigerian Constitution didn’t make a mistake when they unambiguously spelt out the right of the journalist in section 39 subsection one of the 1999 constitution as amended. And, under no circumstances will OMPAN fold it’s arms and watch governors or other trigger happy Executives continue to trample on the sanctity of the Journalism profession”, it said.
