APC queries Obaseki’s readiness to tackle flooding in Edo as NEMA calls for proactive measures

The State Media Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress for the Edo 2020 Governorship election has queried the readiness of the Obaseki-led government to heed the warnings of the National Emergency Management Agency and put in place proactive measures to avert disaster and destruction of properties in flood-risk areas in the state.

This was in reaction to the prediction of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) which marked Edo State as one of the highly probable flood-risk states in the country.

Mr. John Mayaki, the Chairman of the State Media Campaign Council, in a statement released today accused the state government of emptying the state treasury on sponsorship of nefarious political activities, fake protests, and campaign of calumny in the media while neglecting important governance issues such as the management of flood and the protection of lives and properties.

He said: “The warnings of NEMA, based on the predictions of NIMET and NIHSA, that Edo State is among the highly probable flood-risk states in the coming months, should send alarm bells ringing in Osadebey Avenue as a matter of high priority for the state government. Unfortunately, in Edo State today, the governor at the helm is irresponsible and is only concerned with nefarious political activities and name-calling.”

“Etsako East, Esan South East, Ikpoba Okha, Oredo, Etsako Central, Esan North East, and Ovia North East Local Government Areas were all identified as flood-risk areas of the state in the predictions of NIMET and NIHSA.”

“Already, in these areas and beyond, the sprinkles of rain we have seen in the past few weeks have caused great devastation, in some cases leading to the avoidable loss of lives.”

“While the Godwin Obaseki has not deemed it fit to address these concerns with the seriousness it deserves, or even offer compensation to the families who have lost loved ones, properties, and means of livelihood to a disaster worsened by his complete negligence, he has been paying lip service to the residents of these regions of the state, seeking to deceitfully obtain their support and votes through lies and insincere promises.”

“Yet, we keep getting credible information on the billions of state funds he is handing out to tax collectors and other election cycle politicians who are feasting on his desperation.”

“The Water Storm Project carefully designed to proffer lasting solution to the issue of flooding in the state has been politicized by the Governor in his mischievous quest to spite his predecessor and benefactor. Obaseki has turned into a subject of mindless politics, a project that he jointly commissioned and even sourced for its funding through his personal company.”

“He claims the Water Storm Project belonged to the previous administration, even though nearly all the members of the cabinet of that administration who proposed and worked on the project all hold senior positions in his own administration. Apart from the Governor who was the Chairman of the Economic team under Oshiomhole, his Secretary to State Government, Osarodion Ogie, was the Commissioner for Works and he supervised the project directly.”

“Edo people should not be made victims of Obaseki’s desperation and mindless politics. We are going to mount pressure to ensure that NEMA’s call for proactive measures is heeded.”

BREAKING: Oshiomole’s APC ward lifts suspension on him in Edo State

The Executive Committee of Ward 10 in Etsako West Local Government of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo state has lifted the suspension on Adams Oshiomhole as a member of the party.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Emuakemeh Sule, secretary of the ward, 17 members out of 26 signed the resolution.

Oshiomhole was suspended by the party in November following his protracted disagreement with Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo.

It was on this basis that a high court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) ordered Oshiomhole’s suspension as APC national chairman.

Court says Ize-Iyamu is not a member of the APC

Justice Aghamiojie of the High Court of Justice sitting in Benin City has just now ruled that Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu is not a member of the APC.

The court held that the waiver given to him is null and void as he could not prove to the court that he actually did an online registration.

The High Court of Justice sitting in Benin City, disqualified Pastor Ize-Iyamu from participating in forthcoming Primaries on the grounds that he is not a registered member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

We remain in APC, ward, LGA executives who suspended Oshiomhole declare

*uphold Nat’l chair’s suspension

The leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s Ward 10 in Etsako West Local Government Area (LGA) and the party executives in the LGA, have said they are still members of the Edo State chapter of the APC.

Addressing journalists after a meeting at the APC Secretariat in Benin City, on Friday, the Chairman of APC, Ward 10, Etsako West LGA, Mr. Oshawo Stephen, said all the executive members in Ward 10 are still members of the party.

He said the executives were inaugurated in 2018 and are still members of the APC.

Mr. Oshawo said they want members of the public to be aware that they have not decamped to any other party and remain members of the APC in the state and executives of Ward 10, Etsako West LGA.

He stressed that the suspension of Comrade Oshiomhole as member of Ward 10 in Etsako West LGA still remains valid for the suspended National Chairman’s divisive roles in the crisis rocking the APC in Edo State.

Meanwhile, the Chairman APC in Etsako West LGA, Ezolomhe Rabiat, also said the LGA executives are still members of the party in the state.

Real reasons Why APC Disqualified Edo Governor Obaseki from Constesting in the 2020 Guber Elections

All Progressives Congress (APC) Screening Committee for Edo State Governorship election has revealed that it disqualified the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki over alleged discrepancies in his educational certificates and NYSC.

Two other candidates were also disqualified from contesting in the forthcoming July 22 governorship primary election. 2020 governorship elections.

The two are Hon. Matthew Iduoroyekemwen and Egnr. Chris Ogiemwonyi.

The committee however cleared Pastor Osagie Ize- Iyamu, Dr. Pius Odubu and Hon. Osaro Obazee.

EDO: APC Founders Accuse Tinubu of Backing Oshiomhole, as Party Promises Fairness at Screening

Following concerns raised by the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki that he will not get justice from the screening committee of the All Progressives Congress APC, the party has assuaged his fears, asserting the independence of the committee.

Obaseki had on Wednesday night in Abuja shortly after he was screened ahead of the June 22 governorship primary election of the party expressed reservations at the conduct of the committee, saying with his arch political foe and National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole steering the ship of the APC, justice would not be done to him by the committee.

He said; “The last time I came here, I asked that Oshiomhole recuse himself from the process in the interest of peace and justice. But as a party man, I have had to go through the screening like everybody else. Since he is the judge and the jury in this matter, I will just wait for the outcome of the screening. I have given them all the information they need; the controversial certificate from the University of Ibadan has been tendered.

“Like I said, as a party man I have gone through the screening process but I do not believe that I will get justice because Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is an interested party in the Edo process. One of the questions that were asked was why did I issue a gazette that will prevent the party from performing direct elections in Edo. That did I not see it as an anti-party activity? I just felt that if we put politics above the lives of the people of Edo State, we may be missing the point”.

However, National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu told Vanguard on Thursday night in Abuja that the Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee NWC of the party had from the outset decided to allow the committee operate freely.

The screening committee was scheduled to round off its activities yesterday (Thursday). While its operations had largely been shielded from the media, it had earlier in the day finalised the screening of the sixth aspirant in the Edo governorship race, Mathew Iduoriyekemwe.

Asked when the committee would submit its report to the NWC and whether the submission would be done in the open, Issa-Onilu said; “Let them submit first. The decision is to make everything transparent. I do not know if they have submitted because I am not at the secretariat. I am not following up on the committee because we are not supposed to do that. They are supposed to be given a free hand to do whatever they want to do”.

12 members challenge Tinubu’s silence

Twelve founding members of the APC have however weighed in on the crisis in the party, challenging a former governor of Lagos state and national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to call Comrade Oshiomhole to order.

The 12 members made their position known in an open letter addressed to Tinubu and made available to journalists Thursday in Abuja.

Those who signed the letter were Alh. Salihu Mustapha, Chief Polycap Udah, Captain Mohammed Bala Jibrin, Ray Morphy, Alh. Umar Kachalla Zubair and Dr Sylvanus Amechi. Other signatories were Alh. Shaba Emangi, Chief Emeka Enechi, Hon. Charles Idahosa, Hon. Mohammed Aboki Mahmud, Prince Mackor Shaka Momodu and Alh. Yesufu Omonemi.

They described themselves as “founding members of APC and many of us were leaders of legacy parties that merged to establish the APC”.

According to them, when Tinubu and President Muhammdu Buhari pulled political energies together to form the APC, the expectations of both the political class and the citizens alike were that Nigeria had entered a new era of genuine democratic politics.

They said; “Since 2015, President Buhari has so far concentrated his energies, and rightly so, on building an enduring framework for good governance and the turning around of the national economy. By implication, much of the political engineering has become the forte of the APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Partly in recognition of that, in January 2018, President Buhari gave the task of reconciling leaders of the party to Asiwaju. Again, the expectation was that party members irrespective of their background would get justice through fair and transparent reconciliation process because the National leader had experientially tasted in real life and politics what it means to be at the receiving end of official injustices and impunity. It is against this background that we believe that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has a historic duty to come out and assure party members and indeed the Nigerian citizens that he still stands on the pillars of equity, fairness and justice”.

The members said they expect that by now Tinubu should be able to “provide incontestably fair leadership to all party members, through which some specific actions of the APC National Chairman Comrade Adams Oshiomhole can be moderated and made to conform with internal due processes as provided in the provisions of the APC constitution, no matter how loosely defined given the motto of our great party –Justice, Peace and Unity”

Oshiomhole did not immediately respond to Vanguard’s attempt to get his reaction. Since his Chief Press Secretary, Simon Ebegbulem was named a Commissioner in Imo State, the APC national chairman has not named a replacement.

2023 Presidential ambition
The members also spoke on Tinubu’s presidential ambition, saying his actions now would have a great effect on his future aspiration.

“We are also making this demand, bearing in mind that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is eagerly desirous of continuing from where PMB stops in 2023, and his response to issues of the day within the APC, will signpost how the soup will eventually taste. We made this assertion with all sense of responsibility based on the belief that our party deserves the best and we are proud to have some of the best democrats Nigeria has produced as leaders of our party. Therefore as one of the best democrats in the history of our country, Asiwaju needs to categorically declare his position on many of the contentious decisions of the Comrade Oshiomhole’s NWC. This calls to question the democratic credentials of our party and with it the democratic orientation of our leaders in the party. Will our leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, be on the side of fairness and democracy? The side of justice and reconciliation, or the side of impunity and disunity perpetrated by no other person than the APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole?

“We would recall that the APC has set up a powerful reconciliation Committee under the revered former National Chairman of APC, Chief Bisi Akande. However, to date, nothing has happened. Moreover, is that how we will keep trudging till 2023? No reconciliation, only acrimonies, engineered by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole? Is that how we want to pay the sacrifices made by the duo, President Buhari and Asiwaju? Clearly, as the National Leader, Asiwaju Tinubu will be doing party members a great deal of injustice without coming out and providing reconciliatory direction on this crucial matter of internal party disputes.

“We would not like to entertain the idea that the moral authority of our National Leader cannot be activated now, to put the APC on an even keel for more exploits in 2023 and beyond. We should not forget that we have suffered incalculable losses since 2015, and even more crucially by sheer mismanagement of our affairs, we are inadvertently giving oxygen to the PDP, a failed political formation that we thought we had castrated in 2015.

Tinubu subtly supporting Oshiomhole

“However, can there be a reconciliation in an atmosphere of impunity perpetrated by the National Chairman of APC, which could not have been possible without the tacit green light from the National leader himself? We find it bewildering that just within a space of one month, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole had serially and violently violated the APC Constitution; that the silence of Asiwaju, the National Leader is disconcerting.

“Could it be that now we should forget about constitutionalism and due process in the affairs of APC? First, Adams Oshiomhole has constituted himself as a one-person National Working Committee of APC. It is distasteful and undemocratic that Adams Oshiomhole has subordinated the entire NWC to his whims and caprices such that the team spirit and canon of collective responsibility envisaged by the APC Constitution are no longer there.

Edo politics

“Who gave Comrade Adams Oshiomhole the power to convey the decision of the NWC to INEC, as critical as that of the mode of primaries for Governorship election three bright days before the meeting of the NWC on the matter? The implication of this illegal, nay irresponsible action is that the NWC did not meet to approve such a decision. At best, the NWC was convened to rubber-stamp his illegalities.

“Also, the APC National Chairman wrote a letter to INEC to change the official address of the Edo State chapter of APC contrary to Article 8 (page 6) of the APC Constitution, which also requires the approval of NEC. In the same vein, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole drafted a PDP loyalist into APC, a person that is being prosecuted by EFCC as we speak, a person that fiercely fought against the election of President Buhari in February 2019 elections in Edo State using the stolen arms money President Buhari is currently retrieving, a person with no clear allegiance to President Buhari and the APC, and unilaterally gave such person a waiver to contest Governorship primaries without NEC approval.

“Now, if this had been the practice, then we can say that Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has not only emasculated the NWC but put the NEC in one corner. Thus, by refusing to convene the meeting of the National Executive Committee of APC to consider critical decisions, Comrade Oshiomhole has murdered democracy in the APC. As democrats, we believe that such actions are reprehensible and condemnable. No leadership will condone such illegal actions that can only undermine the democratic ethos upon which APC stands. They are already tarnishing the image of the party, creating disillusionment and apathy amongst party members and destroying the beautiful legacies of President Buhari which frees the atmosphere for healthy inter- and intra- party contestations.

“So, where is the National Leader when one man is desecrating the APC Constitution and at every turn killing the party? Is that the kind of party we would want to ride on in 2023? Is Nigerian politics about to witness the rebirth of former President Obasanjo’s draconian control of party structures as we move closer to 2023? It is time for Asiwaju Tinubu to demonstrate his democratic leadership. It is time he gives life to the institutionalization of APC and not create the perception that he is behind this brigandage that is tearing the APC apart, with severe consequences for the capacity of the party to hold on in one piece as we inch towards 2023. 2023 in APC must be about strengthening internal democratic rules in APC, it must be about ensuring that all APC leaders respect internal rules as provided in the constitution, and it must be about fairness and justice for all members”.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu harps on unity in Edo APC, warns followers to refrain from castigating other aspirants

The frontline aspirant of the All Progressives Congress in Edo State, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu has called on his followers to refrain from castigating other aspirants vying for the party’s ticket in the state.

In a statement by Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu Campaign Organization and signed by the Director of Communication and Media, Mr. John Mayaki, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu restated his commitment to the accord by the aspirants including Dr. Pius Odubu, Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi, Gen. Charles Airhavbere (Rtd), Chief Solomon Edebiri, Hon Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonyinma, Hon Saturday Uwuilekhue, Prof Fred Amadasun and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu to conduct friendly campaigns, conscious of the fact that at the end of the day, a consensus aspirant would be selected that will enjoy the support of the other aspirants for what he described as the “more important task of rescuing our state from the claws of incompetence, intolerance, and reversal of growth and development.”

He said: “Through the Directors of my campaign who remain active in our organization’s continuous efforts to offer relief to Edo people as COVID-19 restrictions bite harder, I have repeated my message to our followers across the state to refrain from attacking or castigating other aspirants vying for the party’s ticket.”

“These aspirants, all of whom I have a cordial personal and professional relationship with, share our desire to bring growth and development to Edo State and undo these past few years of disorganization, confusion, and bitter politics that has poisoned our state and sadly relegated actual governance to the background.”

“Although the process of selecting a candidate may seemingly portray a sense and feeling of competition, at the end of the day, we remain members of the same party, tied by a common goal. I have previously communicated my readiness to back any of us who gets the assent of the party to fly our flag at the polls even if it’s not me, and I wish to restate that promise once again.”

“For me, what is most important is that we offer true leadership to our people and reclaim the promise of our party.”

Oshiomhole was not part of mock primary, Edo APC leaders confront Gov Obaseki

All Progressives Congress, APC leaders in Edo State on Thursday described the Governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki as a serial liar for dragging the name of the party’s Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole into the mock primary that he was not involved.

Apparently peeved by the governor’s comment calling on the Federal Government to hold Oshiomhole responsible if he fails to curb spread of the Covid-19 in the state.

The leaders poopoohed his claim declaring that despite collecting N350billion from various sources yet there’s nothing on ground to show.

The leaders said, “We, the underlisted, represent the several thousands of APC leaders, stakeholders and members In Edo State whose determination to replace Mr Godwin Obaseki in the forthcoming gubernatorial election is unwavering. Not every leader deserving to endorse the following statement could have their names included hereunder for want of space.

“Our attention has been severally drawn to publications by Governor Godwin Obaseki and his agents in a section of the press, alleging that the National Chairman of APC, organized a “mock primary” in Edo State on April 30, 2020, purportedly to pick a candidate for the Gubernatorial election in Edo State. He further alleged that the meeting had over 50 persons in attendance, thereby flouting his government’s directives on the fight against Covid-19 pandemic in the state.

“We hereby vehemently deny any involvement of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in our activities. We also state emphatically that there was no crowded meeting of 20 persons or more by this body of APC Leaders anywhere in Edo State in recent time. We hereby challenge Mr Godwin Obaseki to prove his allegation of a crowded “meeting of more than 50 persons” by releasing a video of such event. A look at the list of those who issued this statement on behalf of our teeming members will expose the rudeness in describing us as puppets of Oshiomhole by Mr Obaseki in the statement under reference.

“The twisted narrative by Mr Obaseki, is meant to drag the National Chairman, Comrade Oshiomhole’s name into our activities in order to blackmail him. This is an ongoing but over used strategy for his ill-fated campaign for second tenure. We state unequivocally that we are not intimidated by Mr Obaseki’s hackneyed bashing of and disrespect for the former Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, whose excellent performance in government remains the selling points for our party till date.

“Contrary to the resort to personalised attacks by Godwin Obaseki on the National Chairman, who is not contesting any election, we are confronting Mr Obaseki with the evidence of bad governance, mindless embezzlement of state funds, destruction of democratic culture, wicked demonization of those on whose backs he rose to power and systematic destruction of APC, the platform that brought him to power.

“As at April 2020, Edo State Government under Godwin Obaseki has netted about N350bn ( Three hundred and fifty billion Naira). The bulk is made up of Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) disbursements and Internally Generated Revenue, all amounting to about N300bn, Bail Out fund N17.5bn and Paris Club Excess deductions Refund, enhanced by exchange rate differentials, making up the balance.

“Against this huge funds, never seen before in Edo State, there are practically no projects to justify the expenditure of the huge receipts.
All promises, celebrated signing of MOUs, deceptive adverts inviting tenders and even inviting the Vice President on state visit to flag off construction of INDUSTRIAL PARK, came to nothing. There is not a single project worthy of commissioning as Mr Obaseki moves towards the end of his tenure.

“Even in the current fight against Covid-19, he does not care about the sufferings of the people but he is busy converting the opportunity for embezzlement, embarking on political campaign in the 192 wards under the guise of personal sensitization campaign against coronavirus. The state was shocked when he announced they had already spent over One billion Naira on the pandemic within two weeks. Till today there is no lockdown in Edo state in order to avoid spending on palliatives. Yet he moved markets to school premises in the entire state with a promise to fumigate the markets statewide. No fumigation has been carried out and the school premises are fast becoming Refuse dumps. Huge crowds are crammed into whatever space in the schools without social distancing. He ordered people to wear face-masks but his government did not provide any for the poor masses. The number of infected people is growing exponentially, he doesn’t care.

“House of Assembly elections were held on the 9th of March 2019 and APC won all 24 seats, but till today Mr Godwin Obaseki would not properly make a proclamation and facilitate the orderly swearing in of every member. He spirited away 10 of the members who were cajoled to choose his preferred member as Speaker. A caricature of the solemn event was conducted at night for those 10 who were funnily clad as shown on social media. 14 members-elect have been debarred from exercising their mandate till today. Thugs were deployed to hound them into exile, for insisting on doing the right thing democratically. Worse still, he has killed the democratic principle of check and balances in Edo State Government rendered 14 state constituencies unrepresented.

“Any one who disagrees with Obaseki in Edo State is endangered. Thugs are deployed at will and agencies of government are sent as hounds to make life miserable for such persons. Bombs have been thrown into people’s homes resulting in massive destructions but curiously no arrests were made.

“Mr Obaseki attempted to annex the party secretariat as a department of his Government House and the dispute arising from that, led him to unilaterally purport to change the party executives. He and his government have refused to be guided by the party’s constitution and he rushes to court to procure injunctions to frustrate party discipline without exhausting internal mechanism for resolution of dispute. He has actively frustrated the admission of new members from time to time.

“Given these and many other destructive tendencies, We, as respected leaders of the party are consulting among ourselves and we will come up with one of the many Aspirants, whom we will mobilize and vote for at the forthcoming primaries in June to replace Mr Godwin Obaseki.
Lies against and even blackmail of Comrade Oshiomhole by Mr Obaseki will not stop us from rescuing our dear State from his misrule.”

NCDC to quarantine APC members who conducted mock primaries – Party official

Factional members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Edo state, who allegedly conducted a mock governorship primaries last week would be soon be quarantined by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC).

Factional state publicly secretary of the party loyal to Governor Godwin Obaseki, Mr. Joseph Osagiede, made this known on Wednesday while responding to Edo People’s Movement (EPM)’s paid publication to deny a mock primary that took place in Benin.

Recall that five aspirants allegedly gathered at the private residence of Lucky Imasuen, a former Deputy Governor of the state, under the directive of the national chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole, to pick a consensus aspirant to wrestle the party’s ticket from incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki, in the election coming up later this year.

The mock election tagged ‘family meeting’ however ended in deadlock, with one of the leading members of the party in the state, Barr. Henry Idahagbon, alleging non-transparency on the part of the organisers of the meeting.

Osagiede alleged that the over 50 delegates gathered against the directive of the federal government’s social distancing policy and prohibition of public gatherings of more than 20 persons, to check the spread of Covid-19.

He added that the large congregation of persons which took place at a time when collaborative efforts are being put in place to curtail the spread of Covid-19, contravenes the NCDC’s guidelines.

“The information did not reach us in time that there was such a gathering, by the time the information got to us, they had started fighting within themselves and that was what led to their dispersing.

“We have since informed the NCDC, whose responsibility it is to arrest, quarantine and isolate them to determine if they are safe to be in the society,” he said.

Osagiede described a statement in the said publication that Obaseki has merely scratched the surface and played to the gallery in his effort at fighting Covid-19″, as mischievous, noting that Edo state is the flagship in the fight against the pandemic.

“Unfortunately, EPM members are too blind to see all of these Governor Obaseki’s management of the pandemic, his well-articulated and structured lockdown and curfew management has become a national model,” he added.
