Edo Assembly invasion: Police arrest 7 pro-Obaseki thugs with firearms

The Edo State Police Command has arrested seven pro-Obaseki thugs involved in the siege laid at the Edo Assembly complex on Thursday to prevent the majority of elected members, who have since impeached the former Speaker and replaced him with Rt. Hon. Victor Edoror, from sitting in the complex.

The arrest was made yesterday when the Police responded to an emergency call from 17 elected members of the Edo Assembly who came under attack by thugs reportedly directed by the Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, to prevent plenary from holding at the Complex.

The thugs identified as Festus Agbonrenren (25 years), Odion Osayande (23 years), Ogbeiwe Wilfred (52 years), Morgan Uwaigboe (47 years), Osayomore Salami (25 years), Ifeoluwa Oladele (36 years), and Iginobaro Collins (26 years) were arrested with five double-barrel long guns, two single barrel long guns, and ten live cartridges within the premises of the Assembly complex.

Sources have confirmed that the arrested thugs have all confessed that they were mobilized by the Special Adviser to Governor Obaseki on Political Matters, Edo South, Mr. Osaigbovo Iyoha, and his Special Adviser on Parliamentary Issues, Mr. Kabiru Adjoto.

Governor Obaseki made an appearance at the Assembly Complex on Thursday to offer a robust defense of the actions of the thugs and the destruction of parts of the Assembly complex under the guise of ‘renovation’, although he failed to answer questions from journalists who sought an explanation on how an Assembly of 24 elected members could be formed and presided over by 7 lawmakers purportedly loyal to the Governor.

Meanwhile, an activist group in Edo State, Democracy For All, has condemned the actions of the Governor and demanded an immediate prosecution of the arrested thugs and their sponsors.

In a statement released on Friday morning, the group denounced the invasion of the Assembly Complex as an ‘egregious crime and affront on the constitution and the rule of law’, insisting that the arrested thugs, who have confessed their ties to the Edo State Governor, must be made to face the wrath of the law alongside their accomplice no matter how highly-placed.

Its statement read in part: “It is a shame that in Edo State today that we have a Governor who is insisting that a House of 24 members should be led and constituted only by 7 members. And to sustain this illegality, he has turned to violence, vandalism, and dark politics.

“While we thought our democracy has evolved and left certain ugly trends behind, Governor Godwin Obaseki, by his actions on Thursday, set us back many years with his flagrant abuse of office, violation of the integrity and expected character of his esteemed position, and the promotion of violence and illegality.

“Our first demand goes to the Police and it is to immediately commence processes for the prosecution of the arrested thugs and their direct sponsors, Mr. Osaigbovo Iyoha and Mr. Kabiru Adjoto.

“Their prosecution will signal to the world that Nigeria is neither home to criminality nor a jungle where appointees of government can break the law at will and threaten law and order through the sponsorship of thuggery, violence, and unfortunate contribution to arms proliferation.”

BREAKING: Court bars Governor Obaseki from contesting Edo PDP primary

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has barred incumbent governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, from contesting the governorship primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rescheduled for Thursday, June 25.

Reports just coming in from the Rivers State capital said that the order was issued yesterday, Monday, June 22, 2020 in a suit FHC/PH/CS/69/2020.
One of the reports, by the portal 1st News, said the order of interim injunction granted by Justice E.A Obile based on a suit filed by Hon. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, who is also contesting the PDP primary for the Edo State gubernatorial election.

The portal said that a Certified True Copy (CTC) of the court order sighted by it “reveals that Hon. Ogbeide-Ihama had prayed the court to bar Obaseki from contesting the primary election on the grounds that the Edo Governor did not purchase the nomination form for the election. Also, he had held that Obaseki did not undergo screening within the time frame stipulated in the timetable by the PDP.

“Furthermore, the plaintiff had sought an order of the court restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); from recognising Obaseki as a candidate of the PDP in the primary election.

“Joined in the suit was the Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, Emmanuel Ogidi, Hon. Kingsley Chinda; Chief Bodekeme Boyleyefa, Sen. James Manager, Hon. Ajibola Muraina, the PDP, Obaseki and INEC.

Consequently, Justice Obile who heard the motion ex-parte ordered that the status quo be maintained. This is pending the accelerated hearing of the motion on notice on Wednesday, June 24, 2020.”

Obaseki defected to PDP on Friday, June 19, 2020 after being disqualified from contesting the APC primary in controversial circumstances. He and his Deputy Governor, Phillip Shuaibu, were soon granted a waiver to contest the party primary for the governorship election.

I have not joined any other political party yet – Obaseki

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki has stated that he has not decamped to any political party to seek re-election.

Obaseki made this known in a statement he authored and released via his Twitter account on Wednesday.

The governor added that his main focus is to control the spread of COVID-19 ravaging the country and not the governorship election slated for September in his state.
He said: “I have not moved to a new platform yet to seek re-election.

“My focus now is to control the spread of the coronavirus (#COVID19) pandemic, which is ravaging our country and threatening our healthcare system.”

However, Godwin Obaseki’s latest revelation came after the suspension of his political adversary, Adams Oshiomhole, as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, on Tuesday.

Obaseki also announced his resignation from the APC on Tuesday. However, the party said they have no record of his deregistration as of Tuesday.

I Resigned From APC, Because Of My Respect For Buhari- Obaseki

Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, on Tuesday made his decision to quit the All Progressives Congress official after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja.

He said announcing his resignation at the State House was a mark of respect for Buhari and in keeping with the promise he made earlier that he (Obaseki) would speak on his next move after meeting with the President.

Speaking with State House Correspondents after the meeting, Obaseki noted, “I have said that before I make a decision, I have to show respect to my President, who I adore, who for me is an epitome of incorruptibility, an epitome of order, an epitome of lawfulness.

“This is the man whom for him that is what Nigeria should be all about. I think I owe him that respect to come and tell him what I have done and why I have decided to take the decision I took.”

The APC’s screening committee had last week disqualified the sitting governor from participating in the June 22 primaries ahead of the September governorship poll in Edo state.

Obaseki’s meeting with Buhari came barely 24 hours after APC National Chairman, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, led National Working Committee members to a meeting with the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof Ibrahim Gambari, at the Presidential Villa.

The agenda was the Edo APC crisis and Oshiomhole seized the opportunity to defend the decision to disqualify Obaseki on the grounds of “inconsistencies” in school and National Youth Service certificates.

Obaseki explained that the decision to dump the APC came after he consulted widely with stakeholders and supporters across the state to his convictions.

“(I’m) just here today to inform you that I have now decided formally to resign my membership of the All Progressives Congress. Having done that, I will now announce in the next few days my specific line of action and what platform I will be contesting the gubernatorial election on.”

Asked a specific question on why he resigned, the governor replied, “I am sure the whole country knows and is aware of what has gone on with me and the party chairman in party leadership, which culminated in my disqualification as a gubernatorial aspirant.
“Upon that unfortunate decision by the chairman of the APC, I have decided to go and seek my gubernatorial aspiration on another platform.”

He dismissed Oshiomhole’s position that the incumbency factor would not save him, saying, “Time will tell. Let us go to the polls and Nigerians will see.”

Obaseki also answered questions over alleged inconsistencies in his school and NYSC certificates.

He spoke elaborately on the issues, “Someone who hasn’t gone to school, who doesn’t have a certificate himself, will not know and understand what inconsistencies in certificates are. That is the starting point.

“I want you to send this message to Oshiomole, that the God of heaven stand with Obaseki. God of heaven stands with Obaseki. I know that Oshiomole knows all the people in Abuja and he is using that manipulation to gain one or two favours, but I have said it before that if Oshiomole likes, let him fly to the sky, the Word of the Lord will come to pass. Edo State has been committed into the hands of Obaseki. Oshiomole and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu are just beating about the bush.

“It doesn’t matter which party he belongs, that is what God has revealed to me. Whatever the party, Obaseki will complete his eight years as Edo State Governor. God will humiliate those who oppose him.

On Ondo, Emmanuel Chukwudi said:
“The incumbent governor is going on unopposed. I see a lot of conspiracy against him but it will not work.

“In fact, I am seeing that man, after completing his governorship position in Ondo, I am seeing him in the Senate. He will win his second term, and he is in Senate already.

On March 5th, Chukwudi had said, concerning Edo:

“I have a great prophecy about Edo. In 2016, I spoke about Edo when God shower me President Buhari in black. I said back then that Obaseki must win the election, no matter the manipulation of the PDP. I also said that Pastor Osagie Ize Iyamu will not go anywhere and that Obaseki will emerge winner.

“Now hear the Lord again concerning Edo- I see in the spirit realm that the battle in Edo, against Governor Godwin Obaseki will turn out a blessing for him. Who Hod has chosen, no man can stop. If Oshiomhole likes, let him fly to the sky, Obaseki must emerge victorious.

“The almighty God whom I serve, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob has chosen Obaseki to rule Edo State for eight years, and no matter what the enemy might manipulate, no matter what Oshiomhole may plan, he and his manipulations will fail.

“God has ordained Obaseki to govern the good people of Edo State for eight good years.

“Oshiomhole is Mr Nobody now in Edo politics, and as far as God is concerned, the state is in the hands of Obaseki for the next four years”.

Governor Ganduje hails APC over Obaseki’s disqualification

The governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje today said the decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to disqualify his colleague, Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, from seeking reelection on its platform was the right one.

Governor Ganduje also said the ruling party would win Edo polls without the incumbent’s efforts.
Mr Ganduje stated this at the COVID-19 press briefing which held at the Government House Kano.

He said the “APC was guided by the party constitution, electoral laws and constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria before arriving at the decision”.

“As far as the issue of Edo is concerned, we’re more worried about legality. We have to follow rules and regulations while conducting our affairs for the election,” Mr Ganduje said.

He added that “as far as Kano State is concerned, it is doing whatever it takes for APC to win Edo election because all the right procedures have been followed. We will win the election.”

Real reasons Why APC Disqualified Edo Governor Obaseki from Constesting in the 2020 Guber Elections

All Progressives Congress (APC) Screening Committee for Edo State Governorship election has revealed that it disqualified the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki over alleged discrepancies in his educational certificates and NYSC.

Two other candidates were also disqualified from contesting in the forthcoming July 22 governorship primary election. 2020 governorship elections.

The two are Hon. Matthew Iduoroyekemwen and Egnr. Chris Ogiemwonyi.

The committee however cleared Pastor Osagie Ize- Iyamu, Dr. Pius Odubu and Hon. Osaro Obazee.

Edo guber:Obaseki’s reelection dicey as INEC approves direct primaries for APC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the direct primaries mode for the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Edo State governorship election. This was disclosed via the electoral body’s Twitter page on Tuesday, June 9.

“By the timetable and schedule of activities issued by the commission on 6 February 2020, party primaries for the Edo governorship election will take place between 2 and 27 June 2020,” the notice posted on INEC’s Twitter page read.

It continued: “The commission appeals to the various political parties to conduct their primaries in full compliance with the 1999 constitution and electoral act 2010 (as amended), regulations and guidelines for the conduct of political party primaries (2018) and the INEC policy on conducting elections in the context COVID-19 pandemic of 21st May 2020.”

With the stance of the electoral commission, incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki, may have lost out in his bid to get the ruling party’s ticket. Obaseki has been canvassing for an indirect primary, while his predecessor and national chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole have been advocating for direct primary. The duo have been at loggerheads over the soul of the party in the south-south state.

Meanwhile, an aspirant in the forthcoming Edo state governorship election under the APC, Engineer Chris Ogiemwonyi has said that Governor Obaseki should not be allowed to fly the party’s flag during the September 19 election.

Ogiemwonyi, a former minister of state for works, said the governor was foisted on Edo people in 2016, adding that he does not deserve a second term in office if the state must progress.

According to him, Governor Obaseki was not in the political calculation in Edo state in 2016, until Oshiomhole, then state governor, supported him. Despite Ogiemwonyi’s stance, a group of professionals known as Edo Good Governance Group (E3G) have backed Governor Obaseki in his ongoing effort to return for a second term.

After a meeting on Wednesday, June 3, the group called on all Edo people to rally round the governor to ensure that Oshiomhole, “does not impose his cronies on the state through an ambush.”

Oshiomhole, Obaseki APC camp establish factional secretariats in Edo State

Ozioruva Aliu

DESPITE the seeming resolution of the crisis in the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with the return of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as the national chairman of the party, the same may not be said of the Edo State chapter of the party as a faction of the party loyal to Oshiomhole has opened a new secretariat.

The secretariat which is less than two kilometres from the original office of the party was opened with fanfare, prayers and thanksgiving service with several leaders and members of the APC in the state led by two governorship aspirants; former deputy governor of the state, Rt Hon Pius Odubu and Saturday Uwalekhue while other governorship aspirants were said to be in Abuja in solidarity with Oshiomhole.

But the leadership of the faction loyal to Governor Godwin Obaseki and led by Anselm Ojezua yesterday insisted that it is the legally recognized leadership of the party and the secretariat it occupies is the only recognized APC state secretariat in the state.

The spokesperson of the faction loyal to Oshiomhole, Chris Azebanmwan told Vanguard yesterday that Col David Imuse (rtd) is the acting chairman of the party as he said Ojezua has been legitimately removed.

This he said was confirmed when it was Imuse that attended the last NEC meeting of the party as Edo state chairman and that he was also there when state chairmen visited President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said: “After we removed Anselm Ojezua in November last year, armed thugs took over the secretariat in their thinking that we want to eject Ojezua from the office, but we know that no Edo citizen’s blood is worth the political ambition of anybody because we were aware that all of those that they were doing was in furtherance of Mr Governor’s second term ambition. So we decided that at the end of the day the building does not make the secretariat. If the National Secretariat of our party wants to get in touch with our party in Edo state, they will get in touch with us wherever we are located. It was fortunate that the Campaign office of Mr President for his second term was available so we decided to adopt that place as our operational base”

When contacted, the Spokesperson of the faction loyal to Obaseki, Pastor Joseph Osagiede said “I am not aware of any other state secretariat. That is not allowed by law, our party does not allow for two secretariats so that is illegal”
