The younger brother to Edo State Deputy Comrade Philip Shaibu, has been kidnapped by gunmen at Irhiri, Benin City.
Jungle Journalist Media Ltd learnt that Mr Frederick Shaibu was kidnapped at about 7 am, while the gun-toting kidnappers left his children in the car, bewildered.
Irhiri community, where the kidnapping took place, is a few metres away from the Ogba Zoo, where Mr Osa Ehanire, manager of the zoo and younger brother to the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, was kidnapped sometime ago, with the Ogba River serving as the getaway route for the men of the underworld, operating with speed boats.
According to available information, the kidnappers were yet to make any contact with the Shaibus as at the time of filing this report.
A family source who confirmed the incident on condition of anonymity disclosed that the kidnappers “attacked him and took him away. It happened at around 7 am when he was going to drop his children in school. The children were left by the gunmen and they took their father away. But the incident has been reported to security agencies, they have not made any contact with the family.”
“It is believed that the kidnappers came through the river because people who saw the incident said they went through the bushes in that area that leads to the riverside. Security agencies have been informed and they are doing everything possible to ensure that he is released unhurt and be reunited with his family,” The family source revealed.
The Edo State Police Command Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chidi Nwabuzor, said, “I am not aware of this development yet but I will find out.
Amid the fanfare that greeted Governor Godwin Obaseki’s pitching tent with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to contest for re-election in Edo State, his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, has also led his supporters in defecting to the PDP.
Comrade Shaibu, who spoke to journalists after obtaining his PDP membership card at the party secretariat in Benin City, expressed disappointment over the undemocratic actions and tendencies of Comrade Adams Oshiomole in his management of the APC at the national level.
He stated, “I have a mixed feeling with this action. First, one struggled to form a party and after forming that party, those that benefitted from the party took over the party and became tyrants. It is not always easy that after one helped to form and nurture a party, one individual would say he is an Adolf Hitler in the system and becomes undemocratic. That was what happened in the APC.”
Comrade Shaibu, however, expressed his unalloyed loyalty to Edo people, noting that their calls for the governor and his team to join the PDP has been heard.
He assured that Governor Obaseki remains steadfast with his vision and mission to actualise the aspirations of Edo people and that the strides made in social, economic and human capital development of the state must not be compromised.
He said: “Some of us believe in the people. We believe that the people must lead at all times. Because of that, we cannot afford to abandon this state for people like that. That is why we decided to abandon them in APC and join the PDP today.”
Earlier, Jungle Journalist Media Ltd had report that the Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, officially joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in furtherance of his ambition to seek re-election for a second term in the September, 2020 gubernatorial poll in the state.
The governor, who had kept a lid on his next move since leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC), quietly drove out of the Government House, Benin City, on Friday, at 2:25pm, headed for the Secretariat of the PDP in the state.
The governor’s motorcade drove through major roads leading to the PDP secretariat on First East Circular Road, Benin City, to cheers from both sides of the road.
Speaking to a gathering of party members and supporters, Governor Obaseki, said: “I am here to inform you that upon my resignation from the APC, having consulted widely from within the state and across the country, I have decided to become a member of the PDP.
“As has been demonstrated, this is a party that is rooted in democratic practices; it believes in justice and fairness and respects its members. Today is not the day I will make a speech. You will hear from me soon.
“I am here to go through the formalities of registering as a member of this great party. I know that upon taking membership of this party, I automatically become the leader of the party; that is the constitution. I read it thoroughly last night.”
He continued: “I want to assure all of you that I am prepared to provide leadership that will lead the party to victory. I will provide a leadership that will not only put PDP ahead in Edo State but, as a ruling party in Edo State, we will make sure that the level of progress, growth and participation in the political system by our people is unrivaled in this country.
“I am very happy to be here. The reception I have received has been ecstatic. The energy I see here is the kind of energy I require to take Edo to the next level.”
Noting that he was committed to changing the narrative of the party in the state, Obaseki said, “If you think we have done a lot in the last four years, you haven’t seen anything yet. With the quality of people I have seen here, the quality of people running the party, and the energy of youth I see, by the grace of God who made this day possible, I am committing to you that I will not only lead this party to victory in Edo State, but we will make sure that this party sets an example of how states should be run in Africa. Today, it is with great pleasure, Mr. Chairman, that I have come to formally take on my membership of this great party.
The governor was received by the National Vice Chairman, South-south of the PDP, Chief Emmanuel Ogidi, in the company of the PDP State Chairman, Mr. Anthony Aziegbemi and other party executives, including the governor’s ward chairman.
*Says Barrister Ogie, Philip Shaibu frustrated Edo CoS out of office
Fearless and consistent, Patriot Patrick Eholor has been known to speak the truth, and fight for the masses, even when there is threat to his life.
He became famous for staging many protests against some unpopular decisions of the then governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and even extended his protests against the then Federal Government, National Assembly and to any sector where the common man faces oppression.
Truly, Eholor fits into a succinct description of himself he gave to Jungle Journalist Media Limited “I am a man who is a social crusader, a man who has put his life before men and risked everything that I have, and ate fire for my people to drink water”.
His relentless campaigns led him to receive a meritorious award from the African Bar Association some time last year in far away Liberia, in the presence of President George Weah.
Now in this interview, Eholor cries out about the dangers facing Nigerians in the wake of COVID-19, and specifically talks about Kano and late Abba Kyari.
He also comments on recent resignation of the Chief of Staff to Governor Godwin Obaseki, among other things:
Covid-19, Kano, Abba Kyari:
Abba Kyari was a victim of his own impudence. Before he passed on, because of nepotism and indiscipline of these so called bosses who call themselves leaders, I have never recognised any of them as a leader, I have always seen them as bosses. Because a boss is somebody who wants everything done his own way, a leader is one who seeks your opinion, will accommodate you and you all work together.
Abba Kyari moved the budget allocation of the Ministry of Health to the Ministry of Agriculture. Who does that? That’s why I said he is a victim of his own impudence. As we speak today, it has not been reversed. Whatever money the Health Minister needs, he will have to pass through the Ministry of Agriculture.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture has to approve whatever he wants. Its not done anywhere. The current minister now, is finding it very difficult in this Covid 19 era.
Unfortunately, as is usual with our ministers, they feel that the president is God and they can’t approach him and tell him where they feel the pain. The president isn’t God, he was elected.
Now, there is no isolation centre in the whole of Kano. The only few that they had have been closed, some people have contracted Covid-19 and have absconded. So there are walking corpses everywhere in Kano, waiting to die, and distributing the virus.
If he has not moved the Health Ministry to Agriculture, perhaps the health sector would have been working and he won’t end up a victim of his own. So we have to be careful not to throw stones into the market as we don’t know who its going to hit.
Back to the Kano case. What can you say about Kano and the challenges of Covid-19?
We should call the lawmakers-Senators and Federal House of Representatives, who know that they were genuinely voted in, and acknowledge that they have a responsibility to represent those who voted for them, and remind them that this Covid-19 is real and they should stop playing politics with it.
First, Nigeria will wake up to be responsible to its citizens, to talk to Airtel, MTN, to talk to local and multinationals, Dangote, and those we call rich men. They should call them to come in and assist Nigerians.
Nigerians need that help because they cannot be at home and also be hungry. They are not afraid of Covid-19, they are afraid of hunger.
There was a protest in Kano where people were chanting ‘coronavirus barawo, coronavirus barawo’. It means they are ignorant, it means there is no leadership in that constituency, it means there is no governance in that area. Otherwise they will not say that Coronavirus is barawo, they would have known that its a deadly disease and has no respect for anybody
Having said that, are you aware that about 25 to 35 of very prominent people that have lost their lives within the past few days in the North? So what they have to do is to begin interstate ban. There is no movement into and out of the states. Nobody should leave Edo State to Lagos, nobody should leave Ibadan for Sagamu, Kaduna to Sokoto, Warri to Bayelsa, or leave Bayelsa for Calabar. Because there are a lot of carriers who do not even know and they are taking it from one place to another.
You need to see what happened in New York, and over 53,000 have been lost in the country. The last interview you did with me I told you over 10,000 have lost their lives. So by the day, its counting.
We have people who go to the North and buy cows, tomatoes, yams and onions. We also have our northerners who travel from the North to the South, they should stay in the North for now. If there is any people coming to the South, let us quarantine them.
It’s not enough to say they have no right to travel.
They should be in their respective quarters until we find a solution.
Resignation of Chief of Staff to the Governor of Edo State
What’s your opinion on the resignation of the Chief of Staff to the Governor?
You don’t ask me that, you journalists know what’s going on. What I think is that you reap what you sow. This thing started from Adams Oshiomhole who is my brother and my friend. Because Oshiomhole is a man that was so open in governance, he entertainer no secrecy.
He might have his own flaws, he might have his own issues but he was open to a fault. When he took Barrister Osarodion Ogie as his chief of staff, Ogie enjoyed that position without interference. But Patrick Obahiagbon, the Igbodomigodo, who is also my friend was not so fortunate. Igbodomigodo was a victim of loyalty, of kindness, a victim of honesty. Because he had an aspiration, those who didn’t want him to aspire high, who wanted to stop him did just that.
So Osarodion Ogie took the job of the CoS and was doing the job of the CoS, even though he was no more the CoS.
Igbodomigodo was not too happy, but because of his loyalty to Oshiomhole, he bore that burden.
Now, Akerele came from Lagos and didn’t understand the politics. The Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu whom I know very well, who loves power and will do anything to get it – he knows that, he is my friend. Even when he reads now he will smile and giggle, because he knows that I am the Observer – General in politics.
The same way, he knows the history of his boss, Adams Oshiomhole. But he and Ogie didn’t want a free hand given to Akerele. Akerele was more like just like a CoS by name. He wasn’t doing anything representative of his office. He was redundant, and may have become useless, but because he was not a useless person, he realised sooner than later that he was very useful to himself, his friends and family and said I will no longer tolerate this, it’s either I live free or die.
So he said, I beg to resign. Thank you for letting me work with you. If the likes of Shaibu or Ogie had allowed Akerele to work, he would have delivered as a CoS.
Are you invariably saying Governor Obaseki has no hand in it?
I don’t know the governor too well to either deny or accept anything of him. I love the governor so well from a distance, but I am afraid of the devil in him. There is a demonic power in the governor that supercedes the genuine work he is doing.
Please can you throw more light on this?
You can see some people very nice, very respectful to your rights, you cannot predict them, but more also, whenever they are doing things that does not please God, the devil will tell them that they are doing what’s right. Continue, you don’t have to listen to anybody, continue, you should imprison or destroy anybody you want to destroy. You should not listen to any advise. That’s why I said that I am afraid of the devil in him.
Otherwise, if you look at him name, Nogheghase Godwin, my own must come to pass, you have won, its all synonymous with God. But because there is something in him that he needs delivering from, that’s why he is surrounded by those two powerful, destructive forces that we are seeing destroying his government today.
On September 19th, Edo state citizens will head out to the polls to choose their next governor.
The party members would have to choose a representative for their party then, in turn, present the candidate to the electorate to make a choice.
With the campaigns underway, there is palpable fear in the camp of the Obaseki Shaibu Movement, OSM as credible reports reaching us indicates Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu has secured the endorsement of Edo Central APC members and advancing towards Edo North to dislodge the state deputy governor, Philip Shaibu.
Ize-Iyamu who is known for always taking the lead has made considerable inroads in Edo central in the last few days.
The fieldwork conducted from March 27th to April 9th shows the voting intention ahead of the APC primaries is on the upswing for Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
Edo Central is currently on lockdown and fully secured for Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, with Obaseki facing a slump in the senatorial district.
Definitely, the COVID-19 response has played a major role in altering the figures. Although Ize-Iyamu has always been on the lead in opinion polls, his response to the coronavirus outbreak has tripled his lead in Edo Central.
Party members were beneficiaries from his relief palliatives and all coordinators of the POI campaign organization were given large qualities of relief packages comprising of bags of rice, beans, yams, oil etc to freely give among their followers and admirers.
The school community, community leaders, Muslim community, Christian community etc were all beneficiaries from the outreach.
Pastor Ize-Iyamu’s wife, Prof Ida Ize-Iyamu who was spotted visiting and distributing relief items in Edo central also made a tremendous impact on the rating of Pastor Ize-Iyamu.
With the conquering of Edo Central, Pastor Ize-Iyamu seems to be advancing towards Edo North to completely dislodge the state deputy governor, Philip Shaibu.
This is currently causing unrest in the camp of Obaseki Shaibu Movement as members are alleged to be considering dumping Obaseki/Philip Shaibu for Pastor Ize-Iyamu.
Majority of the members stationed at Edo North complain of the lack of attention by the OSM leadership in the State.
They say the state governor and his deputy have distanced them for long and are still isolating them till date.
Meanwhile, Pastor Ize-Iyamu seems to have done the needful in capturing the hearts of Edo North APC members.
Majority of the APC members spoken to in Edo North reiterated the fact the Pastor Ize-Iyamu has always carried everyone along irrespective of whether it is an election year or not.
‘His consistency of reaching out is second to none. We are not even talking about his superb COVID-19 response but his consistency in reaching out to the people.
This is not the first time we are benefiting from his benevolence so when we say we are solidly behind Osagie Ize-Iyamu we sure know what we are talking about.
Ize-Iyamu has secured our trust’.
That was how an ardent supporter of the Obaseki Shaibu Movement was quoted as saying.
With Edo Central secured and a certain victory in Edo North, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu who hails from Edo South might be confident of victory if he maintains his current lead.
Leaders of All Progressives Congress, APC at all levels including the ward and Local Government Executives have been assured that nobody has the power to delist them from the party register.
The assurance was given by no other person than the Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon Comrade Philip when he met with party leaders from across the 11 wards and in Sabogida-Ora, headquarters of Owan West Local Government.
Speaking at a town hall meeting with ward leaders, Shaibu said he came to allay their fears of the alleged threat by some persons to delist party leaders from the register. ”
I came to fraternize with you and reassure you of what the party constitution stands for and also to let you know that what you heard was fake news, nobody can take your names off the register.”
He noted that the essence of the meeting was to, “Clear doubts that we are hearing from some of our party people who are being threatened by some people in Abuja that their names would be removed from the All Progressives Congress (APC) party register if they don’t stop supporting the Governor.
” I have come to reassure you that nobody from Abuja can remove your names from the wards they registered because there is a process for suspension, there is a process for even expulsion. No one can just remove your name from any ward executive list.
No national working committee member can do that. For even the dead, there is a process for replacing their names from the register not to talk of those who are living.”
Accusing Comrade Adams Oshiomhole for being the cause of all the disagreements within the APC fold in the state, Shaibu said:
“We have discovered that nobody is contesting against Governor Godwin Obaseki except Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. He is the only contestant who is contesting with Governor Godwin Obaseki in the forth coming election in Edo State.
He is the only one going round doing rallies. If he is not interested in governorship why is he going round one rally to another even when the Governor has banned rallies?
The leader of the party in the state, the Governor of the state and of the party would defend all of them with the power given to him as Governor and leader of the party and governor of the state. I have just come to reassure you of that.
Going down memory lane on political issues, he said “When we were doing congresses and even after it, did you remember that they wanted to change your names, did they succeed? If they could not succeed at that time why do you think they will succeed now?
Sometimes when people see that all they set out to do is failing, they resort to threats to see if people can fall prey. This is what is happening now. Comrade Adams Oshiomhole remains the suspended Chairman of the APC, even when he was Chairman, he could not remove your names from the list. So, why now?
The party has its own rules and regulations, above all, constitution. One man cannot decide the faith of all of us. That he is chairman does not give him the power to say ‘if you don’t follow me, I remove your names.’ He is not the one that elected you. Even me, I cannot remove your names because there are rules that you must follow to remove people’s names.
If people can change names, how come Oshiomhole was suspended from Ward 10 in Etsako West Local Government Area where he comes from and the chairman that suspended a national chairman, his name has not been removed from the list? He is still the chairman of ward 10.
All those people threatening you are doing this because you are more powerful than them. The only thing they feel they can do is to threaten you. When the time comes, you will take them out; hold meetings and suspend them because their actions are anti-party. Whoever threatens you is threatening the party.
The President has told us that we must build our party from the scratch to the top; from the very bottom up to the top. Is it not from wards that everything starts? Who is the president referring to? Is it not the ward executives?
If the president who is the leader of the party in Nigeria can say that we build the party from the ward and the constitution of the party says for you to suspend anybody, you must start from the ward. So you must know who has the power?
If you have the power at ward level why must you allow anyone to push you around? The power of APC is in your hands. You are the ones that can change and even suspend them or expel them.
The party constitution did not say one national chairman or that one national committee would suspend you or remove your name from the register. There are processes. As you were elected your names are already gazetted.
So, to remove any of you from the APC list we must go through the congress of the party but first we are informed of this through writing at the ward level which is later sent to the Local government area (LGA) who send it to the state who in turn send to national, who at the convention or national executive council (NEC) meeting, would now decide on it. That is the process.
One man cannot sit down in one office and make critical decisions concerning the fate of others. I just want to tell you not to panic, the power is in your hands. All our people that are afraid, please let them know the processes for removing names from the register.
The power of the party is in the ward. All processes start from the ward and end at the national executive council of our party, not national working committee.
The president, his vie and all the governors are members of the NEC where our governor would sit with others and somebody says they want to deal with you? They don’t have the power based on the process I just explained to you.”
He told them to exercise the powers they hold as ward leaders, “I am here to reassure you that you are not only authentic but the constitution of the APC made you authentic since you went through the process of election and you were elected. And, you are the ones that elected the president, the last House of Assembly members and even our chairman and other political office holders. You are the authentic leaders that chose us.
After you people chose us, how can we come back to remove your names? I stood with you when your names were not gazetted and you succeeded. I am still standing by you. No one should use the power they would have used to attract infrastructural development to your area and use such power to oppress you. We will stand against them and take them out of the system by the power of God.”
Ventilating on the need for continuity in government Shaibu reaffirmed, “Obaseki has taken governance to the next level. Oshiomhole told us that Obaseki would stabilize and redefine the economy of Edo State. We pay our workers as at when due.”
Chairman Owan West, Hon. Frank Ilaboya who was elated by the clarifications affirmed, “I want to appreciate the Deputy Governor for coming to our Local Government Area (LGA) to give our executive confidence.
There has been so much threat that something will be done to them but today, we are happy. He has come to clear the air. He has assured them that they are there and there forever. They are going to exercise their civic responsibilities.
They, as executive, remain so. That has been the crux of the matter. Even when we were organizing this meeting today some of them were called and told not to come that their names would be removed from the executive list.
The Deputy Governor has been able to say ‘this is where we are going’ and we are very happy about it. I am happy he has nailed the issue on its head and everyone is happy. We appreciate him for this. We also appreciate the fact that we are the first Local Government Area he is visiting. Their second term in office is non-negotiable, that is what we stand for.
