BREAKING: Fuel tanker explodes in Delta, killing many (PHOTOS)

About 20 persons have been reportedly burnt to death when a tanker carrying petroleum product exploded around Koko Junction section of the Benin/Saepele Expressway in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State.

The incident, according to sources, occurred around 11am on Wednesday when the tanker exploded.

It was gathered that the victims were burnt beyond recognition while no fewer than 10 vehicles were gutted by fire.

“The tanker carrying petroleum product was trying to escape a bad spot when it fell and suddenly exploded between Koko Junction and Ologbo section of the Benin/Warri in Delta State.

“More than 20 persons were burnt beyond recognition. About 10 vehicles were trapped in the explosion. The victims were occupants of the burnt vehicles.

“Officials of FRSC and security agencies are already here trying to remove the corpses. Many persons were injured. It’s a terrible situation”, a source eh witnessed the incident told our correspondent.

HAPPENING NOW: More tanker fires burning in Lagos, Onitsha, properties lost

A fire outbreak is currently raging in Victoria Island part of Lagos ongoing, just as another fire outbreak was recorded in the Omagba area of Onitsha, along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

This is coming barely 48 hours after a tanker set markets and homes ablaze in Onitsha.

The Lagos fire outbreak erupted when a tanker belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) had a headlong collision with another tanker belonging to the Dangote Group.

Both trucks were loaded with petrol. The incident occurred on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road on Lagos Island.

Men of from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and Fire Service were making efforts to put out the fire and toe the trucks out of the way to restore traffic flow as at the time of filing this report.

In Onitsha, a tanker loaded with petrol reportedly fell and caught fire in the early hours of Friday.

An eyewitness said the disaster occurred around 2.30 a.m.

The incident happened close to Bessoy filling station, along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

The tanker carrying petrol was said to have fallen in the middle of the road, spilling its contents into the drainages.

Residents living in the area ran away for fear of getting consumed by the inferno.

Properties worth millions of naira including buildings, vehicles and other valuables were reportedly gutted by the fire.

No casualty was recorded as of the time of filing the report.

Anambra State Commissioner of Police, John Abang confirmed the incident.

He said, “This time around the fire service responded well after they were contacted by my men.”
